My Gums Feel Sore

When your gums feel sore, it can have different causes. If the condition lasts longer than a week, you should consult your dentist.

Can Gingivitis Cause Your Gums To Feel Sore?

This is the most common cause of swollen gums. Most sufferers don’t know that they have it because the symptoms can sometimes be mild.

If it’s left untreated it may lead to tooth loss.

Oftentimes, this is the result of poor oral hygiene. If you don’t brush your teeth and floss every day, plaque can build up on your gum line and your teeth.

If the plaque buildup isn’t eliminated, it becomes tartar, which is harder to remove through brushing and flossing alone. This can lead to gingivitis.

Malnutrition May Cause Soreness in Your Gums

If you don’t take enough vitamins B and C, you may suffer from malnutrition and it may cause you to feel soreness in your gums.

Vitamin C is one of the essential vitamins that you need as it can help in maintaining and repairing of gums and teeth.

If you lack this vitamin in your body, you may develop scurvy, which may lead to anemia and gum disease.

Infections May Cause Your Gums To Feel Sore

Any type of infections can cause your gums to feel sore. For example, if you have herpes, it could sometimes lead to acute herpetic gingivostamatitis, which leads to swollen gums.

Thrush may also cause your gums to swell. This is the result of an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth.

Medications

Some medications may cause your gums to feel sore. This can be a side effect of your medicine. Consult your prescribing physician about it and find out if an alternative that won’t cause gum swelling can be taken.

Switching Toothpaste Brand

This, too, can cause your gums to feel sore as the soreness can be the result of a reaction to one of your toothpaste’s ingredients. Stop using it and go back to your brand of toothpaste that doesn’t irritate your gums. And if you’re using mouthwash, don’t use a product that contains alcohol.

There are other possible causes of why your gums feel sore. You need to discuss your symptoms with your dentist to get a complete diagnosis.

To ease your discomfort, there are things that you can do.

Brushing and Flossing

This is especially useful if your condition is caused by gingivitis. Good oral hygiene is usually the first resort to recovery.

Diet

If it’s caused by malnutrition, you should try adding fruits and vegetables to your diet. While you’re trying to heal your swollen gums, avoid drinking caffeinated drinks and sodas as these beverages can cause excretion of nutrients from your body.

Salt Water Solution

After brushing and flossing, ease the pain by rinsing your mouth using a salt water solution.
If your gum irritation persists after a few days, you should see your dentist. Your dentist will be able to diagnose the real cause why your gums feel sore.

While you’re recuperating from having swollen gums, you should stop drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco as these habits can cause irritation to your gums.
